What does it mean to teach in the 21st century? If teachers can only provide

  • content
  • facts
  • dates
  • formulas?

If teachers can only provide

  • research
  • theories
  • stories
  • information?

Is our role in the lives of students really essential? Students can find information on anything, anytime, anywhere. Information is virtually limitless.

Teachers are no longer the main source of information. So… ? How do we teach students to handle all the resources that are available nowadays? Sure they know how to use the search engine? But has anyone shown them how to:

    • work on information?
    • synthesize information?
    • leverage information?
    • collaborate with information?
    • problem solve with information?
    • present information?

The answer is ICT.

WHAT is ICT?

Information communication technology (ICT) is a term that includes all technologies and methods for the communication of information (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

It includes any medium to record information (whether paper, pen, magnetic disk / tape, optical disks - CD/DVD, flash memory etc.); and also technology for broadcasting information - radio, television; any technology for communicating through voice and sound or images - microphone, camera, loudspeaker, telephone.

So we talk about the process of input and output information. After that there must be a feedback from our students. The end product of using ICT are students’ presentations, portfolios, own sites, blogs, publishing etc.

With all of these methods and techniques available should our curriculum be focused on facts and content or skills?

Teachers’ aim is to teach students how to remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create (Bloom’s Taxonomy).

WHY should we use ICT?

Why is it so important to teach our students to create? What does creation mean today?

  • Planning
  • Paraphrasing
  • Experimenting
  • Presenting
  • Posting
  • Recording
  • Designing
  • Animating
  • Programming
  • Podcasting
  • Blogging
  • Editing

WHO is responsible for developing skills of 21st century in students?

Who can they rely on? From whom are they learning these 21st century skills? Teachers need to rethink the tools they use and the types of problems we ask students to solve.

HOW to use ICT?

Students should know how to share, collaborate, compare and publish their ideas. Children of any age group (especially young learners) need to be learnt how to work on and present information. We call it the process of input and output information. They must know how to use this information in everyday life while communicating.

How should we use ICT in primary school? Is it a game or the process of learning? The main rule is … Children do not need to be entertained, they need to be engaged.

The entertainment is not the same as engagement.

ENTERTAINMENT

ENGAGEMENT

passive

active

for enjoyment

for learning

short-lived

long-term results

doesn’t require relevance

meaningful

escape from problems

solving problems

using the creativity of others

using the creativity of participant

The teacher’s charge is to provide meaningful and powerful engagement.
